There is important question : what does prosthodontics mean?

  • Prosthodontic dentistry is part of the medicine, which concerned with the design, manufacture, and fitting of artificial replacements for teeth and other parts of the mouth.
  • The most important purpose of prosthodontics are full mouth rehabilitation, normal function and esthetics.there are different constructions in prosthodontics, but mostly there are 2 groups: removable and unreamovable constructions.
  • Removable construction can be easily removed from oral cavity for cleaning or before bed hours, usually this contrusctions are used by patients who have multiple adentia. There are : full type prosthodontics constructions ( in cases when patient have full adentia on upper and also on lower jaw) and partial construction (when only 1or 2 teeth are missing)
  • There are diffrent types of materials, which are used in prostodontics. For example : nylon and acrylics. Also they can be temporary ,which are used for short period of time during implantation. And fixed , when implantation is fully done and patient can’t remove them by himself. These are crowns, veneers, onlay or overlay constructions. With fixed constructions we can easily rehabilitate masticatory system and smile’s esthetics. They are used during 1-2 teeth or full mouth adentia . one of the most important part of prosthodontic is implantation.
  • Dental implants are a popular and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. They involve surgically placing a metal post, usually made of titanium, into the jawbone to act as a replacement for the tooth root. This provides a stable foundation for a crown, bridge, or denture. Implants offer numerous benefits, including improved chewing ability, enhanced aesthetics, and preservation of jawbone structure.
  • Which type of prosthodontics will be most comfortable for patient? It depends on clinical case and should be disscused with patient ,after consultation prosthodontist should decide which will be most appropriate for patient. There are few important factors : occlusion, bone structure, also patient’s wishies.
  • After full consultation prosthodontist can start treatment. Adentia, the absence of teeth, significantly impacts the digestive system by hindering proper mastication (chewing), which can lead to digestive issues. This can result in reduced nutrient absorption, increased risk of gastrointestinal problems, and potential nutritional deficiencies.
  • Physical Impacts: • Chewing and Eating: Missing teeth make it challenging to chew food properly, potentially leading to dietary limitations and digestive issues. • Speech: Adentia can affect articulation and pronunciation, making it difficult to speak clearly. • Facial Structure: In cases of complete adentia (edentulism), facial features can change, causing a sunken appearance and premature aging. • Jawbone Atrophy: Loss of teeth can lead to jawbone deterioration, impacting the stability of dentures and potentially causing further functional problems. Psychological and Social Impacts: • Low Self-Esteem: Missing teeth can cause individuals to feel self-conscious and embarrassed about their appearance, leading to decreased self-esteem and confidence. • Social Withdrawal: The desire to avoid smiling, speaking, or eating in public can lead to social isolation and withdrawal. • Reduced Quality of Life: The combined physical and psychological effects of adentia can significantly reduce overall quality of life.
